Legal Career

Ben began his legal career in 2008 as a prosecutor in the 14th Judicial Circuit of South Carolina. There, he sat first chair in jury trials in Beaufort, Hampton, Allendale and Colleton Counties. Within two years, he was the prosecutor in charge of Colleton County, South Carolina at a time when the community was suffering from regular incidents of violent, gang related criminal activity. Ben continued to serve as an Assistant Solicitor throughout the Lowcountry through his first six years of practice. He was tasked with pursuing justice in serious and violent cases and secured several verdicts and scores of convictions against repeat offenders. During this time, Ben learned from and worked alongside seasoned trial lawyers and gained more trial and courtroom experience than many attorneys obtain in their lifetimes.

Ben transitioned into private practice in March 2014, joining an established South Carolina law firm as an Associate where he later became Partner. There, he practiced in several areas of civil litigation, including personal injury, enforcing insurance agreements on behalf of the insured, insurance agent liability, insurance bad faith, commercial law, corporate litigation, mortgage foreclosure defense, construction defect, and homeowner association litigation. Ben has helped his clients recover millions of dollars for wrongful injury, in disputed insurance matters, and in business disputes.

Over time, Ben’s practice evolved into the intersections of personal injury, insurance, business and property law. His broad background in several practice areas serves him well in representing clients against insurers in complex personal injury and property claims. No stranger to the courtroom, Ben enjoys trial work and complex litigation.

In addition to his personal injury and property and insurance litigation work, Ben represents clients in criminal defense matters on a primarily referral-only basis.

Background

Born and raised in a small town of Danbury, in Stokes County, North Carolina, Ben is the son of two school teachers from a family that places a premium on education, public service, community and hard work. He attended the North Carolina Governor’s School and received his B.A. in Music (vocal performance) from Guilford College where he was a member of the Honor’s Program, a Dana Scholar, and the recipient of the Charles C. Hendricks Scholarship. After college, Ben taught middle and high school music in his hometown before moving to Charleston, South Carolina where he worked as a full-time musician before enrolling in law school.

Seeing a need that he believed he could fill, Ben became a lawyer out of the sincere desire to help people and to assist them in resolving problems they face. He enrolled in the second class of the Charleston School of Law in 2005 as a scholarship recipient. There, he was on the Dean’s List, served as Managing Editor for the Maritime Law Bulletin, and received the CALI Award for Land Use.

Ben’s family instilled the importance of respect of and devotion to his community at a young age. Ben has served on numerous boards and volunteer positions and is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island--VanLandingham.

When he is not advocating for his clients, Ben enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, jogging, playing music, and hiding out at a non-disclosed location on his boat somewhere on the beautiful waters of the Lowcountry.

With over a decade of diverse legal practice and trial experience, Ben Shelton founded the Shelton Law Firm in 2020 to dedicate his practice to helping people and businesses that have suffered serious personal injury, property or financial loss. Shelton Law Firm, LLC is a litigation practice. It accepts a limited number of clients on a largely referral basis. It strives to keep a small caseload to provide personal, effective and responsive legal services to its clients.

Shelton Law Firm prides itself in maintaining good client relationships and in our dedication to our clients. This begins and ends with communication. Part of this dedication is making sure that a client understands the developments with their case and are communicated with effectively on a regular basis. At Shelton Law Firm, we strive to use the best tools available to help clients have access to important information and the status of their matter.

We are a small practice that handles major matters. If you are a client of the Firm, you have a direct line of communication with Ben. Therefore, we select matters carefully to ensure our client’s have the attention they deserve and require.
